Father S. Brice Higginbotham, S.S.L.
I was always a “good kid” growing up.
I tried to do the right thing because it was the right thing, but I can’t say that I had met Jesus “one-to-one” as Mother Teresa said until an experience in Confession during High School.
It had been a while since my last Confession, I certainly needed it, and a friend had told me so in no uncertain terms.
So I marched myself down to the church on Saturday afternoon, confessed my sins, received a simple penance, and was forgiven by God through the ministry of the priest (see John 20:23).
There were no fireworks; there was no sage advice; there was simply my repentance and the grace of the Sacrament.
I met Jesus “one-to-one” that day and my life was on a new trajectory. It was not over. I was not yet a saint. (And I’m still not, of course.)
But I was on the right path.
Soon, I began attending weekly Bible Study.
Soon, I began stopping at the church on the way home from school to pray.
Soon, I began going to Mass more than just on Sunday.
The Lord was—step by step, slowly but surely, and with many stumbles on my part—changing my life and drawing me towards Heaven.
In His great mercy, He continues to do so!
